Words of wisdom...

If people feel God might be calling them to serve overseas, it's very helpful to start being involved in ministry at home. One good possibility is working with international students, which can provide helpful cross-cultural experiences. Another thing which has been helpful to me is talking with people who have had some years of ministry experience overseas. This can give more of a realistic picture of what is involved in serving in another culture.

When you're in Japan, be sure to...

Observe what others are doing, and hopefully some cultural mistakes will be avoided! Take time to listen and be a learner.

Funniest story of life in Japan...

The first time I lived in Japan I accidently wore the slippers to be worn only in the bathroom into the living room of my pastor's home where I was having lunch. This is not a good thing to do in a Japanese home! As I stood in the living room, the pastor's entire family began speaking rapidly in Japanese and pointing at my feet! I then realized what I had done, and quickly went to change slippers.

Wonderful ministry memories...

I especially enjoy talking with college students and others who are considering an overseas assignment. It's been fun to be able to walk with some through the process which eventually took them to Japan, and to see how God removed their fears and concerns, and provided all they needed to serve overseas. Also, I keep in contact with a lot of Japanese both here and in Japan, and it's exciting to see God working in the lives of some that have been friends for years.

Why Asian Access?

I am currently serving with Asian Access because I feel it is an excellent organization which God is using in great ways in Japan. My experiences with Asian Access in Japan were so positive that I am happy to be working with Asian Access now in encouraging others to go short term to Japan and serve.

In Japan, we enjoy...

More than anything else in Japan I would say I enjoy the people. Japanese are so gracious overall, and even perfect strangers have made me feel very welcome to their country and tried to make me feel comfortable while I was there.
